Responsibility and Financing

Who is responsible for the repository?

SKB is owned by the nuclear power industry and is responsible for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The SSM’s responsibility is to ascertain that the method is safe. SKB’s responsibility is regulated in the Act on Nuclear Activities. After closure of the repository, neither maintenance nor supervision is to be necessary.

Who pays for the repository?

In the price that consumers pay for electricity derived from nuclear power, a fee of approximately 1 öre (0,01 Swedish Krona) per kWh of delivered electricity is paid. This is to be used for the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear power plants and the construction of final repositories. The fees are paid to the Nuclear Waste Fund, which is managed under governmental control. This financial system is regulated by the Act on Financing of Residual Products from Nuclear Activities.
